Testimonials
[The best part was] “Learning from someone who has experience in a similar area, i.e. small city gardening” V.T., participant 2015
“For me your method of teaching was perfect. Some powerpoint, some hands on showing us with letting us get our hands into it, along with a support binder of material and references to continue to go back to.“ Wendi Weir, participant 2015
"I`ve gone from knowing nothing about gardening and having no garden, to creating two 4x10 garden beds and friends/neighbors, assuming that I`m highly educated in the area of gardening, asking me for advice. It's been a fun, educational and adventurous course. " Dixie Saint-Martin, participant 2013
Workshop Descriptions
March 14: Container Growing
Growing food in containers is a great solution for small spaces, balconies and decks. Claudia will help you sort out the many choices of materials; including containers, soil, fertilizer, and plants you can grow. We will also discuss when to start your seeds and plants for the coming season.
April 11: Preparing Your Garden – Soil and Seeds
Proper garden beds and healthy soil are the key to happy plants. We will discuss location, soil conditions and different types of garden beds. This session includes info about seed selection and planting techniques for indoors and out. We will start some seeds as well.
May 2: Extending the Season for Longer Harvest
Learn to plan and implement techniques to have a longer harvest; row covers, cold frames, bucket garden or earthbox and fall planting. This session includes tips, challenges and opportunities related to a short growing season.
May 16: Transplanting and Garden Care
Give your plants a good start in the garden with proper protection and support. Learn about hardening off your seedlings, fertilizer use, compost and compost worms. The plan is to also take a look at the community garden’s rainwater harvesting system.
June 1: Garden Companions, Bugs and Weeds
Be prepared for the good, the bad and the ugly. We’ll hunt down some critters and discuss what action is appropriate. The session includes suggestions for helpful companions and how to deal with plants that are not as welcome.
